Course Expectations
There is a 3-way partnership required for success in studying an instrument at the school level: teacher, parent/guardian, and student. Parents/guardians need to help the student find adequate time to practice, and support the student in getting to practice and concerts. Students need to practice and inform the teacher if they need help, or if the instrument requires work. I will provide instruction on playing an instrument, music theory and history, and playing in an ensemble.
Attendance
Attendance of regularly scheduled band classes and band concerts is expected. Participation is the key to your success in band. Showing up for concerts and classes on time, helping to maintain the band room, and maintaining a positive and cooperative work attitude guarantees you reasonable success in band. Attendance records are kept and are noted on report cards.
Instrument
Keep your instrument in good working condition. If something breaks, it is you and your parent's responsibility to make sure that repairs are done promptly. Any damage or loss of school equipment is to be reported to Mr. Robertson immediately.
Music
Please treat sheet music and method books like textbooks. Maintain them in good condition and do not lose track of these. If a music folder is lost with method books and sheet music, a fee may be assessed to cover the costs of replacement.
Practice
Practicing is expected of all band students. It's up to you to ensure that you set aside enough time to practice properly. The average minimum practice time should be about 15 minutes, five times a week. I recommend scheduling a regular practice time. Treat practice the same way you would for a soccer practice or dance class and schedule it. Regular practice of short periods is better than one or two long practices. Remember that you are building muscle and technique!
